Quiggly is Giving You 12 Chances to Win...
Quiggly (my little book-loving monster) is giving you up to TWELVE ways to win Jesus Land. (He's not included in prize, sorry):
Two winners will be announced Sun, 9/22/19 on Facebook. Who's Quiggly? He's my little monster man made by Louisville artist, Bob Lockhart. You can see more of his creations here.
About Jesus Land, the NYT Bestseller by Julia Scheeres that First Exposed the Evil Behind "The Program"
Julia Scheeres was the first New Horizons student to publish a book about her time in the brutal Dominican Republic reform school, aka "The Program" (the one I also attended). But her memoir Jesus Land is about so much more than just the pain of that awful place.
She introduces us to her dysfunctional family and her beloved adoptive brother, David. They're extremely close and share pretty much everything, except the color of their skin. He is black, she is white. This is of great consequence as they navigate their relationships with their parents and their rural Indiana town, a place filled with churches and racism. The book follows their childhood until they both eventually wind up in the Christian reform school in the Dominican Republic
P.S. Although we both wrote books that include stories of our time in the Dominican Republic school from hell (her '84-'85; me '97-'99), our backgrounds and stories are unique. If you choose to read both our books, I promise you won't be bored! 🙂
